Pet owners know how important regular veterinary checkups are to the wellbeing of their animals. In Darien, Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic (BRVC) has been the go-to clinic for animal lovers for over 40 years, priding itself as a clinic that offers the highest levels of patient advocacy and compassionate care.

“It’s very rewarding to be able to help pets who in turn end up giving so much back to their owners,” says Hospital Manager Karen Rooney.

Rooney was hired at BRVC 20 years ago by the clinic’s founder, Dr. Richard Velders. She now oversees a staff of more than 20 experienced veterinarians and caregivers. Eight years ago, BRVC moved to its current location at 8120 S. Cass Ave. to accommodate a growing staff and clientele.

BVRC sees a wide-variety of animals including dogs, cats, pocket-pets, birds and some exotics. The clinic offers a complete range of veterinary services, from wellness care and vaccinations to diagnostics and surgical procedures. BRVC vets are skilled in most modern veterinary surgical techniques and use up-to-date technology; therapeutic cold lasers, for instance, are used to reduce both acute pain and pain related to chronic conditions like arthritis.

BRVC also offers a weight management program where vets work with owners to design an exercise and nutrition program for their animal.

“We’ve had some great success stories with this program,” Rooney says. “People get excited and the pets feel better. It’s encouraging to see older animals do things they haven’t done in a while like meeting their owner at the door.”

Rooney says BRVC goes above and beyond to make animals comfortable during their visit, noting that BRVC recently became the first Fear FreeSM certified vet clinic in DuPage County. Fear Free is a training and certification program that helps veterinarians modify clinic procedures, handling and facilities to help pets feel safe and comfortable while receiving the medical care they need.

“We use pheromones in the exam rooms and reception area to keep things calmer for the animals. We also try to get cats in the exam room sooner so they get acclimated and avoid other animals,” Rooney says. “Generally, we try to keep animals less stressed so they aren’t afraid to come back.”

To earn the Fear Free certification, BRVC co-owner Jeffrey D. Palmer, DVM completed a comprehensive eight-part educational course and exam.

“Implementing Fear Free techniques is a natural next step for Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic,” says Dr. Palmer. “In addition to making sure each pet receives all of the medical treatments needed for good physical health, we’re equally committed to the emotional health of our patients.”

Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic understands the bond parents have with their “furry children” and strives to exceed their client’s expectations while providing the best medical care available.

“We’ve been here a long time and our staff has been here a long time,” Rooney says. “We treat our staff as family and we try to treat our clients the same way.”
