Rotary Club of Darien celebrates The Rotary Foundation centennial

The Rotary Club of Darien will host their Paul Harris Fellow Community Awards Event and Lunch on Tues., Jan. 17 from 11:30am–1pm at Coopers Hawk, Burr Ridge to celebrate the centennial of The Rotary Foundation. At this event, the Rotary Club of Darien will be awarding five Paul Harris Fellows to non-Rotarians in the Darien-area community who have, by their actions, exemplified the motto of Rotary which is “Service above Self.” This event is open to the public. The cost is $25 per person. Register at by Jan. 10.

their annual blood 
drive Feb. 21

Give back by giving blood

The Darien Lions Club’s annual blood drive will be held at Lace School on Tues., Feb. 21 from 4–8pm. You can give blood if you are 17 years or older. You must have a valid ID; 16 year-olds may give blood with permission of their parents. You will receive a free blood test. You can save three lives by donating a pint of blood. The blood you give will help six surrounding counties and their hospitals.

Darien Park District’s indoor Flea Market is Feb. 4

Clean out your closets, attic and garage and make a little spending money for yourself. The Darien Park District will hold an indoor Flea Market at the Darien Park District Community Center on Feb. 4 from 9am–1pm. Pre-registration is required to reserve a spot and space is limited. So bring out your hard-to-part with treasures and get ready to wheel-n-deal. All sellers must be set-up by 8:30am. Any sellers not on-site by 8:30am will forfeit their space.

SEASPAR presents Fish Fry Fundraiser at Wheatstack restaurant Feb. 24

The Southeast Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) is hosting its second annual Fish Fry fundraiser at Wheatstack Restaurant in Lisle on Fri., Feb. 24. Two seatings are available at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Proceeds from the Fish Fry will be used to support SEASPAR’s recreational programs and services for individuals with disabilities served by the park districts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lemont, Lisle, Westmont and Woodridge, and the villages of Brookfield, Indian Head Park and Western Springs.

Come to the Darien Garden Club’s Spring Gardening Inspiration event

Darien Garden Club presents their “Spring Gardening Inspiration” event, Sat., March. 4 from 8am–2pm. The event offers workshops and speaker choices that will inspire your best garden ever and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, goodie bags, vendors and raffles. Holy Trinity School Open House is Jan. 29

Take a guided tour of Holy Trinity School Sun., Jan. 29 from 8am–1pm. You’ll have the opportunity to observe lessons, investigate the science fair displays, visit the computer lab, hear students perform music, learn about the 1:1 iPad program, browse the Art Fair and more. Holy Trinity Catholic School is an accredited day school offering a fully integrated early-childhood development focused preschool for ages 3–5 (full and part-time), and a full-day kindergarten through 8th grade. Darien Park District hosts Ultimate Princess Party Jan. 27

All princesses in Darien are cordially invited to attend an Ultimate Princess Party, Fri., Jan. 27 from 6–7:30pm at the Darien Park District Community Center. In attendance & available to pose for pictures with your princess will be: Rapunzel, Belle, Snow White & Fairy Godmother. Your princess will also decorate her crown to commemorate the event. Pre-registration is required by Jan. 20 and all princesses must be accompanied by an adult.

Drury Lane Theatre presents Saturday Night Fever

Grab your bell-bottoms and take a trip back in time with Saturday Night Fever. Performances take place at Drury Lane Theatre from Jan. 19–March 19. Based on the 1977 hit film, Saturday Night Fever follows Brooklyn teen Tony Manero in his attempt to escape his tribulations by spending weekends at the local discotheque. Featuring your favorite Bee Gees songs from the movie such as “Stayin’ Alive” and “More Than a Woman,” Saturday Night Fever is a nostalgic classic that will bring you dancing in the aisle. Drury Lane Theatre is located at 100 Drury Ln., Oakbrook Terrace.

Mega Model Show and Swap Meet at St. John Lutheran Church

Enjoy a Mega Model Show and Swap Meet at St. John Lutheran Church on Jan. 21, from 9am–1pm. This extensive show and swap meet offers model enthusiasts exhibits and merchandise galore no matter what their preferred mode of transportation. This is not a plastic model contest. There will be at least two operating model railroad layouts and over 60 vendor tables selling plastic model kits and model railroad-related items on two levels of a building that is fully handicapped accessible with an elevator and is adjacent to a large parking lot. This event costs $5 for adults and $2 for youth ages 12–17 years old. St. John Lutheran Church is located at 7214 S. Cass Ave. in Darien.

DarienFest 30th anniversary community kick-off celebration is Jan. 30

Calling all Darien organizations and Darien residents. The Darien Chamber of Commerce invites you to get involved in the planning and the executing of your 30th anniversary DarienFest and make this anniversary event the best ever. You will have the opportunity to join a committee and be part of this historical event. The kick-off celebration will take place at the Darien Swim & Recreation Club, 1001 Hinsbrook Ave., on Mon., Jan. 30 from 7–8:30pm.

Learn a new sport at Windy City Curling

Windy city curling is a curling club operating out of Rocket Ice Arena in Bolingbrook. The club is dedicated to building awareness of the sport. New to curling, or looking to hone your skills? Check out a free program, Mon., Jan 23 from 5–8pm at Veterans Memorial Park in Westmont. After a brief introduction, you will get a chance to participate in a scrimmage game.

Darien Woman’s Club presents a Creative Youth Art Fair

Darien Woman’s Club presents a Creative Youth Art Fair competition on Sun., Feb. 26, 2–3:30pm at Cass Jr. High. Youth ages 4 through high school may submit paintings, drawings, photography, computer generated works and sculptures to be independently judged for prizes. Winning entries receive prizes and their artwork is displayed at the Indian Prairie Library. The registration deadline for the Art Fair is Feb. 10 by mail or at the Indian Prairie Library. Fermilab celebrates 50th anniversary

Have you been to Fermilab lately? The national accelerator laboratory is holding several special events in 2017 to mark their 50th anniversary. On Sat., Jan. 21, the band Mucca Pazza will kick off the celebrations with a concert in the Wilson Hall Atrium. Then, on Fri., Jan. 27 Dr. Chris Quigg will give a lecture at Fermilab’s Ramsey Auditorium covering the laboratory’s first 50 years.
