“Bob has been a dedicated commissioner,” said Diane Main, Westmont Park District President and Past Chair of the Illinois Association of Park Districts. “He really loves the park district and this village.”
At a recent park board special presentation, the Westmont Park District honored longtime Park District Commissioner and President Bob Bernas by dedicating a park on S. Wilmette Ave. in his honor. In addition, Mayor Ron Gunter presented Bernas (right) with the Key to the Village. Bernas has been a member of the Park Board for more than four decades.
Bernas became involved in the community as a Westmont Park Board Commissioner in 1973 and served on the Park Board for the next 43 years including 38 years as president. During his tenure, the Westmont Park District grew tremendously from having three parks and less than 15 acres of land to having over 20 properties and more than 150 acres of park space. Bernas was instrumental in acquiring and developing properties such as Twin Lakes Woods, Bellerive Park, the Westmont Fitness Club, Ty Warner Park, and more.
The Village of Westmont congratulates Bob on his retirement and thanks him for his many years of service to the community.
