The First Division Museum at Cantigny
Park will host a presentation by the authors of “We Gotta Get Out of This
Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War,” on Wednesday, May 11. The free
program (including parking) starts at 7:30 pm in the Cantigny Visitors Center.
In their book, Doug Bradley and Craig Werner explore how and why U.S. troops turned to music as a way of coping with the complexities of the war they were commanded to fight. At Cantigny, the authors will play music from the Vietnam era and discuss the profound influence it had on soldiers and public opinion in the 1960s and 70s.
Bradley, a Vietnam veteran, and Werner, professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, interviewed dozens of veterans and musicians for their widely acclaimed book, published in 2015.
Doors open at 6:30 pm on May 11. A cash bar and limited food menu will be available. Coffee is complimentary. Copies of “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” may be purchased in the Cantigny Shop, located inside the Visitors Center.
This event is part of the First Division Museum’s Date with History, a monthly series featuring lively discussions with authors, panelists, historians and special guests. Information about upcoming programs is online at FirstDivisionMuseum.org
