Also, the Westmont Chamber is working with the People’s Resource Center for their Stuff The Truck Program—residents are asked to bring canned food and dry goods to donate to PRC, which serves area families in need. And be sure to check out the new Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza. For more information, contact the Westmont Chamber of Commerce at or 630-960-5553.

Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza promotes composting

“The EIC is being creative in developing as many recycling opportunities as we can for the residents of Westmont,” says Environmental Improvement Commission Secretary Mary Gabryel. “We want to thank The Farm on 63rd St. for providing a pumpkin composting drop-off this year.”

The Farm, a Westmont business located at 34 E. 63rd St., will be accepting unwanted/used pumpkins starting on Mon., Nov. 2 through Fri., Nov. 6, 10am–4pm, and Sat., Nov. 7, 9am–3pm. All pumpkins must be cleaned free of inorganic materials such as candles and decorations prior to being disposed in the composting collection container.

To bring more attention to the pumpkin composting effort as well as other Halloween events, the EIC has created a very unique special event. “Our EIC members were talking about a pumpkin catapult event,” says EIC Staff Liaison Larry McIntyre, “and we decided to take it a step further by creating the Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza.” Community organizations and public agencies will be invited to put forth one contestant to go 25 feet up in a bucket truck and then throw pumpkins from the bucket at a target on the ground below. The goal is to have a fun, community event and use the excitement of the event as an opportunity to promote pumpkin composting and other Halloween events in Westmont.

The Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza will be part of the Trick Or Treat Trail event in downtown Westmont on Sat., Oct. 24, 11am to 1pm.
